In the summer of 1982, I encountered Lord Maitreya for the first time in a hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. It had only been a few months earlier that I first heard of Maitreya. Although He is known by many names, including The World Teacher, the name Maitreya is best known in the eastern world today. Maitreya (who embodies the Christ Principal or energy) is known in many cultures as a member of the Spiritual Hierarchy, a group of Masters that guide humanity from behind the scenes. Some refer to this group of Masters as elder brothers, angels, saints, or simply guardians of all humanity.
The Hierarchy of Masters has been with us throughout the history of humanity, guiding, teaching, and protecting us. At one time they were openly present. But for thousands of years they have worked from behind the scenes, taking upon themselves the responsibility of overseeing our spiritual evolution from their hidden places in the world’s deserts and high mountains. Now, however, they have returned into our midst, to work openly with the people of the world.
We are told that Maitreya and the other Masters will be working with humanity for the next 2,000 years. They have slowly begun their open work in the world since 1977. Maitreya does not intent to build a new religion around Himself, nor to create followers, nor to impose His ideas upon us. Instead, He will teach humanity “the art of Self-Realization”. He will show humanity how to solve our problems with priorities on adequate food, housing, healthcare and education as a universal right. This, He says, will take humanity into a new era of peace and goodwill.
I wrote a book about my encounters with Maitreya and a few other Masters of Wisdom beginning with my first encounter with Maitreya in a hotel in Baltimore. Extraordinary Times, Extraordinary Beings, was written to give a simple introduction to Maitreya and His purpose. He is not God, although He can perform miracles that startle many. He would prefer humanity see Him as the elder brother of the human race.
In 1988 in Nairobi, Kenya, Maitreya was photographed addressing thousands of people who instantly recognized Him as a great spiritual Master. Similar events have taken place in many parts of the world. Soon, Maitreya expects to address the entire world on international television. He will also telepathically send a message of hope to all the people of the world. Many refer to this coming event as the Day of Declaration.
